Reef Pro's Quarantine Protocol

Benefits of Acquiring a Quarantined Specimen

  • All fish are pest and pathogen-free
  • Eliminate the possibility of introducing a harmful parasite or pathogen that could affect your other inhabitants
  • Eating prepared foods
  • Ships in salinity of 1.025-1.026, which makes an easy transition to home aquarium
  • It eliminates the stress, time and reduces hassle when adding new specimens to your aquarium.

Our bullet point quarantine protocol treats the following parasites and pathogens: Marine Ich (cryptocaryon irritans), Marine Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum), Brooklynella (Brooklynella hostilis), Uronema (Uronema marinum), as well as flukes, worms, and internal pathogens.

Our Philosophy and Quarantine Process:

Our quarantine practice has been developed over many years and has proven highly effective in treating many disease pathogens that would potentially cause problems in the home aquarium. Reef Pro sources, quarantines, conditions, and ships specimens, ensuring the utmost health of each animal from start to finish.

Reef Pro only sources fish direct from the source; we do not buy from transhippers and domestic wholesalers. Reef Pro has established relationships with many divers overseas, giving us the ability to shorten the supply chain. Rather than specimens going from holding tank to holding tank, our livestock goes from the diver directly to our facility, where they are acclimated, quarantined, and conditioned. By the time you receive your fish from us, that fish has only been exposed to one system. This minimizes the possibility of pathogens, stress and greatly increases the long-term survivability of our aquatic animals.

When incoming livestock arrives in our facility, PH, salinity, and temperature are matched to the incoming water to relieve possible stress during the acclimation process. The fish are then given a medicated bath in either: freshwater, formalin, prazi, or methylene blue, depending on species and origin. These pre-quarantine medicated baths allow us to keep the system clean and negate the spread of pathogens from specimen-to-specimen.

At our facility, we use only Aqua Forest Reef Salt® synthetic saltwater in our systems as well as for shipping to negate any possible introduction of pathogens.

We medicate our quarantine system with chelated copper sulfate at 2.5 ppm. Each specimen will stay under copper for a MINIMUM of 14 days. We have observed over the years that due to the duration and life cycle of the parasites we are treating, a 14-day quarantine protocol is sufficient in the irradiation of pathogens.

For those copper-sensitive species, we do tank transfer method; however, that is on a specimen-by-specimen basis. This quarantine method eliminates the use of copper, and by transferring the specimen from system-to-system, it breaks the parasite's life cycle.

During the 14-day quarantine protocol, each specimen is fed prepared foods infused with medications such as Metronitozole, Kanamycin, Praziquantel. These medicated foods eliminate any unwanted internal parasites, pathogens, and intestinal worms.

The system is dosed with a minimum of two rounds of Praziquantel during the 14-day protocol. This keeps the system clean and rids all specimens of flukes.

Once the fish have completed the quarantine, they are now available to be shipped. Upon completion of quarantine, all fish are examined, ensure they eating readily available prepared foods, and are conditioned for aquarium life.

Each specimen is shipped in freshly mixed Aqua Forest Reef Salt® saltwater, matched to our quarantine systems' water parameters to reduce any possible stress. Our fish are packed with an ammonia binder as well as 100% pure oxygen.

Invertebrate Quarantine Protocol:

All Inverts are housed in a separate fish-less system where they are acclimated, quarantined, and conditioned to aquarium life. Even though inverts themselves cannot host parasites and pathogens, they can be carriers. All inverts are held in a system for 76 days without fish to eliminate the risk of pathogens; this results in a pest-free specimen. The longest parasite that can live without a host is Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). The fallow period for this pathogen is 76 days; that is why we choose to hold the inverts for that length of time to ensure they are parasite-free. All inverts are shipped in freshly mixed Aqua Forest Reef Salt® at a specific gravity of 1.025-1.026. This provides a safe and smooth transition to your home aquarium.
